Mirror box
Grafton Primary School, London
Year 5 (9 and 10 year-olds)
The children worked with their class
teacher and the school's artist-in-residence and writer-in-residence
to create this multi-sensory mirror box, entitled 'It
Starts to Rain...' To make the figures inside the box,
the children learnt to translate a 2D image into a 3D
free-standing structure using modelling techniques.
Here, they used wire and plaster bandage.
To make the soundtrack, the children visited the National
Gallery and wrote freely in writers' notebooks in front
of Renoir's painting. At school, fragments of their
writings were selected, rehearsed in small group voice
sessions and recorded. The rainy soundscape evolved
from a writing and drama workshop.
