Weather paintings
Thorpe Greenways Infant School, Essex
Year 1 (4 and 5 year-olds)
The rain in Renoir's painting led
to discussion about the weather in general. The children
created Parisian scenes and then thought about the type
of weather they wanted to portray. They worked out how
they could show the weather in the skies over Paris.
This involved a problem-solving process, for example
'How do you show rain?'.
Having studied the different aspects of the weather,
the students looked at weather maps on the Internet
and created relief weather symbols using clay. They
incorporated mixed media, including oil pastels, glitter,
glue and sand on colour-washed backgrounds.
