Ashdell Preparatory School, Sheffield

8 and 9 year-olds

The children talked in lessons about what Tobias might have felt when he met his guardian angel. They compared the way people communicated their thoughts and feelings historically with the way they do now using modern technology.

A postcard of the painting was cut into 20 pieces. The pupils then used free Colour Picker software, along with the digital image and zoom facility on the National Gallery’s website, to recreate colours from the original painting. They used a word-processing package to make their own angel ‘word cloud’. Each square contains examples of colours found in the painting. Pupils chose a white mount to create a dazzling effect associated with their idea of an angel.
