Interpretation of 'The
Fighting Temeraire'
Druzhba saturday school
This work was made by children aged
five to 11 from Druzhba, a Saturday school for children
of Russian and Lithuanian backgrounds in East London.
The children wanted to create the effect of stained
glass. After painting the background using acrylic paint
on 16 individual canvases, they used strips of coloured
paper to add texture and definition. Gold paper was
added last of all to reflect the light and capture Turner’s
luminosity.
Druzhba, meaning friendship, was set up in 2003 by a
group of parents in order to maintain a sense of their
culture while also developing knowledge and respect
for the one in which they now live. 'If you give children
the opportunity to do the things they love, they'll
use their time usefully.' (Galina Clark, founder of
the school) |
