Take One Picture: Discover, Imagine, Explore

Children Inspired by Georges Seurat

Annenberg Court, 21 May – 21 September 2014

Looking closely at 'Bathers at Asnières' by Georges Seurat ignited children's curiosity. Inspired by the painting, they explored lines of enquiry, including rivers, industry, changing landscapes, leisure and painting techniques.

This display showcases creative investigations that transformed the painting from a two-dimensional object to a three-dimensional experience for children in the classroom.

It is a hazy summer's day in the 1880s, a time of significant urban development and industrial change. Painted on the scale of a traditional history painting, Seurat depicts a scene of everyday life. Young men relax and swim on the banks of the River Seine, which runs through the nearby French capital, Paris.

The stretch of river depicted is at Asnières to the north-west of the city. In the background a steam train roars across a railway bridge. The factories and smoking chimneys of Clichy lie beyond. Closer to the viewer, a man in a top hat and a lady with a parasol travel along the river in a punt flying the French flag.

Seurat's palette is limited to pure, vibrant colours and he uses complementary colours, side by side for enhanced effect.
